DEC 5 2014 • MSO TEAM • PRESS RELEASES • CONCERTS
For the first time in the 42 year history of the Mississauga Symphony Orchestra (MSO), the organization will present two Christmas concerts; CHRISTMAS TIME IS HERE, a family oriented program that will be a joint presentation by the MSO and the Mississauga Symphony Youth Orchestra (MSYO); and, HALLELUJAH! MESSIAH & FRIENDS, a full-scale evening concert featuring highlights from Handel’s famous oratorio, Messiah. Both concerts will take place on Saturday, December 13 under the baton of Maestro Denis Mastromonaco, and will be housed within Hammerson Hall, a world-class theatre that is the pride of Mississauga’s Living Arts Centre. CHRISTMAS TIME IS HERE will begin at 2pm; HALLELUJAH! MESSIAH & FRIENDS will begin at 8pm. Heated underground parking is available free of charge beneath the Living Arts Centre. Family pricing is available for both concerts. Tickets begin at $25, and can be purchased by calling: 905-306-6000, or by visiting: mississaugasymphony.ca.
The MSO and the MSYO combine membership to bring patrons their first joint presentation, CHRISTMAS TIME IS HERE. In this family oriented program, the combined orchestra will perform Christmas sing-a-long favourites such as Leroy Anderson’s famous, “Holiday Medley”; Mel Torme’s, “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire”; the ever popular, “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”, Frozen’s “Let it go”, and an entire host of sing-a-long favourites. Audience members are encouraged to bring their bells to jingle along with each holiday tune. For those without bells of their own, the colourful merry makers will be available for purchase so that no one is left out of the festive tradition. The Long & McQuade instrument petting zoo, a favourite at every MSO Christmas concert, returns to allow aspiring musicians of all-ages to test their instrument of choice. As an added touch, the atrium of the Living Arts Centre will be transformed into a Christmas bazaar that will feature holiday gifts created by the multi-talented musicians of the MSO, and a book sale featuring a robust selection for collectors and casual readers alike.
In a full-length evening concert titled HALLELUJAH! MESSIAH & FRIENDS, the MSO will present highlights from Handel’s masterwork oratorio, Messiah. Joining the orchestra will be a chorus and soloists who will perform selections which include the uplifting and iconic Hallelujah chorus. HALLELUJAH! MESSIAH & FRIENDS will also feature highlights from the Christmas Oratorio by the great Baroque composer, J.S. Bach. HALLELUJAH! MESSIAH & FRIENDS will mark the first time the MSO has presented Handel’s traditional Christmas favourite.
The MSO would like to acknowledge the generous support of Pratt & Whitney Canada and Great-West Life Assurance. Without their support, this fantastic holiday double bill would not be possible.
