Paul Barna, the second place winner of the First Annual MSO Youth Concerto Competition, returns to the MSO as a soloist to perform the unique Walton Viola Concerto. In his short career, Barna has appeared as an orchestral musician with top Canadian orchestras including the Kitchener Waterloo Symphony, Sudbury Symphony Orchestra and The National Academy Orchestra of Canada. Barna has performed under the baton of renowned conductors Zubin Mehta, Peter Oundjian, Leon Fleisher, Denis Mastromonaco, and Jean- Philippe Tremblay. Paul’s diverse repertoire has not limited him to the classical genre as he has performed frequently with JUNO award winning rock band, Arkells. Rarely performed, the Walton Viola Concerto contains a beautiful and melancholic sensibility that display the unique sounds of the viola. The first movement is introduced by a lyrical melody and exchange between soloist and woodwinds. An energetic second movement brings the viola to its limits as the extended use of the instrument produces brilliant results. The final movement reaches its excitement as Walton layers the themes from both the first and third movement together.
