Oct. 15: Dies Irae - Season Premiere
OCT 14 2016 • MSO TEAM
Join us on Saturday,
October 15 inside the stunning Living Arts Centre for Dies Irae, our 2016/17 season premiere!
Translated to, “Day of Wrath”, Dies Irae will be our tribute to the haunted spirit of late fall and the dark imagery of All Hallows Eve. Selected for its strongly programmatic nature and ominous tone, Hector Berlioz’s “Symphonie Fantastique” will be the feature piece of the evening. Often described as a compelling musical portrait of the troubled psyche of an artist, “Symphonie Fantastique” is a thrilling glimpse into a complex spectrum of mental states, including morbidity, obsession, intoxication and hallucination. Our soloist for the evening will be pianist Stanford Cheung, winner of the Third Annual MSO Youth Concerto Competition. The youthful Mr. Cheung will make his debut as a soloist, performing Liszt’s virtuosic Piano Concerto No. 1 with the orchestra.
Prior to the concert, join Maestro Denis Mastromonaco in the Atrium of the Living Arts Centre for his popular Meet the Maestro pre-concert presentation that will touch on the themes and history of the music to be performed later in the evening.
